Lies Vanloocke paints realistic landscapes she discovers while traveling with her family. Both the artist and her family members take photographs during these trips. This leads to different perspectives of the same subject from which Lies chooses her favorite image. By giving the chosen image unusual colors, she creates a seemingly fantasy landscape in which she emphasizes the grandeur of nature and its overwhelming power. Her recent canvases focus on the volcanic landscape of Lanzarote. Lies applies thin layers of paint to the canvas and plays with the transparency and underlying layers. By painting a frame along the borders of the canvas, her subject becomes extra special and elevated, given shape by Gods.
