Martin Baeyens

Lives and works in Smetlede (BE).

During 40 years, this artist was a professor at the KASK in Ghent. Today, he is still painting and designing graphics. On a regular basis he travels to the far east where he is invited by Chinese museums and artists.

In his series “Back in Flanders”, Baeyens brings together writing in pencil in Eastern tradition with a classically painted colourful landscape. This universal theme allows the spectator – wherever he is in the world – to imagine himself in a recognisable environment. The colours the artist uses to create his canvases are limited and are placed prominently at the top of the canvas in a simple brushstroke.
