Frank Kenis’ oeuvre revolves around the fragile strength of a man/woman. The figures he depicts are always refined and have a mystical appeal that is often enhanced by the environment in which they are painted or by the attributes the artist gives them. Kenis paints with oil on canvas and applies the paint very thinly. The dark colors create depth in the canvas, it contrasts well with the light tones of the figure’s fragile skin. This fragility makes these paintings very intimate. As viewers, we are invited to reflect on the emotion behind the portrait and thus be confronted with our own feelings. The latter requires courage from the viewer. However, this is the artist’s intention. He wants to encourage us through his paintings to dig deeper into ourselves and look for what is hidden in ourselves.
