As a self-taught artist who doesn’t care about any trend or fashion in art, Annette Defoort has created a unique technique also used by ancient tribes. Slab-built ceramics is a technique where flat, thin pieces of clay, or “slabs,” are cut, shaped, and assembled to create ceramic objects. In slab building, the artist manually manipulates the clay by rolling it out into flat sheets and then joining them together to form the desired shape.
Annette’s sculptures are build up from the inside. Her sculptures are archetypes of people and animals. Every impression of perfection is consciously avoided; the rough, the unpolished, the non-planned and the non-charming is maintained throughout her whole work. Spontaneity takes control and the sculpture builds itself without much interfering by the artist herself.
“That’s the essence of my work: two hands in the strength of the earth”, the artist says about her work.
